In 1971 verscheen het boek Through the Looking Glass met daarin het beroemde nonsensgedicht Jabberwocky geschreven door Lewis Carroll.
In dit gedicht waarschuwt een vader zijn zoon voor drie dieren die de omgeving onveilig maken speciaal de Jabberwock. De jongen gaat er met een zwaard op uit en weet de Jabberwock te doden. Weer thuis gekomen wordt hij met vreugde ontvangen.
Het gedicht is door Donovan op muziek gezet en op you tube heb ik er een opname van gevonden,
Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the vlaws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, snd shun
The frumious Bandersnatch! "
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought -
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
Ans, as in unfish thought he stood,
'The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
